With westward settlement, especially in the Shenandoah Valley, there were increasingly more artists and patrons of German descent in the early south. Jacob Frymire, born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, worked as an itinerant artist in Virginia and Kentucky. While his paintings are characterized by the linear quality often found in the work of Backcountry artists, his paintings, such as Amelia Heiskell Lauck (1760-1842), demonstrate his interest in tackling complicated pictorial arrangements and providing detailed renderings of settings and accessories.
