Birch was a plentiful and versitle wood often used by craftsmen in the Georgia piedmont.  This candlestand, entirely of birch, was given a dark finish in imitation of walnut or mahogany.  It descended in the family of William Cathey of Rabun County, who according to family legand was its maker.
