During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries white settlers in Georgia’s backcountry displaced native peoples from their ancestral homelands. This turned side chair reflects the interaction between native Georgians and newly-arrived white European settlers. Its form demonstrates the probable Germanic origin of its turner; the weaving of its seat reflects the influence of Cherokee basketry.
