Sir George Houstoun was born during the final years of Georgia's trusteeship. He died a citizen of the United States of America. Like many Georgians, Houstoun prospered after the Colony came under direct British rule in 1752 and limits on land and slave holding were eliminated.
Houstoun, like many Georgians had mixed feelings about separation from Great Britain. In 1775 he joined the First Council of Safety to oversee the boycott on taxed British imports, and was a member of Georgia’s first Secession Convention representing Savannah. Sometime around 1779 Houston switched allegiance, a change of heart he was taxed heavily for following the war.
