"A Land of Liberty and Plenty":
Georgia Decorative Arts 1733 - 1860
October 1, 2009 - March 31, 2010
G. Wilson Douglas Jr. Exhibition Gallery at MESDA
Founded in 1733, Georgia was the last of Great Britain's North American colonies. Nearly three centuries later it is the South's most populous state, an economic powerhouse located between the "Old South" along the Atlantic coast, and the "Deep South" along the Gulf of Mexico. Its decorative arts traditions reflect the diverse ethnicities of its peoples and the realities of their lives.
In May 2009 MESDA more than doubled the number of Georgia-made objects in its collection. Many of MESDA's newest acquisitions will go on view for the first time in this exhibition.
