Born in Queen Anne County, Charles Wilson Peale studied under early American artists John Hesselius, John Smibert, John Singleton Copley, and Henry Benbridge.  In 1767, Peale completed his artistic training in London and returned home to become one of America’s most important artists of the early national period.  This portrait depicts Mary Carr Grundy (b. 1762), the wife of prominent Baltimore merchant George Grundy (1755 - 1825), and their infant daughter, Mary (1788 - 1809).
